Great Internet radio and much more!
I use the HP Dreamscreen for my daily alarm clock, because of its extensive feature set (three timers, select musical wake up tunes for each, red numbers at night, etc.). I also like being able to have it off all day and it automatically coming on late at night, when I want a bedside alarm clock (like everything else, customizable). Overall the unit's user interface makes using the many features easy.
The Internet radio support, especially for Pandora, is excellent. The unit sounds good for what it is, about what you'd get from any decent plastic tabletop radio. But plug in a good set of computer speakers and you've got a cheap and easy upgrade for the audio (I tossed them under the bedside tables). The Dreamscreen is also a full featured photo frame.
Setting up the wireless networking was easy, with a well polished process. Almost any question can be answered by the full screen tutorials, located in the 2GB of onboard memory (you can free up about 300MB by deleting them).
My wishlist is similar the other reviewers':
Sleep timer for the audio
A basic browser
Ability to plug in any Internet Radio station (but HP does provide a massive selection from all over the world)
I give it 4.25 stars out of 5 and would recommend it to anyone.
Jack of All Trades, Master of None
HP had a neat idea here, but somewhere along the way from concept to completion it lost its way.
It is too pricey for what it offers. I essence it is an expensive clock/calendar, internet radio player and 10" picture viewer, with a few other bells and whistles thrown in for good measure. The interface is time consuming and cumbersome to use and the speaker is not strong or of a very good quality. On the plus side the screen is nice and bright with a good viewing angle, and it displays photos and video nicely. And it does connect wirelessly to the internet.
Let's break it down:
1. It easily connects to my home network, after I changed the security settings.
2. It is a good photo viewer though there are better dedicated ones. It can connect to your Snapfish library...if you have one.
3. Stream music from the internet or from your home PC. However, the interface for this is cumbersome and choosing internet stations is a pain. And then there are those underpowered speakers.
4. It works as an alarm clock and you can wake up to music. Okay I guess.
5. You can monitor your Facebook account and friends' status, but you can't update yours.
6. It has a calendar. Yippee.
7. Weather reports can be accessed from the web. Nice but not essential, just turn on the weather channel.
This product practically begs for touch screen capability. If it had that, then I would say it is worth the price. But know, you are left to use either the remote or the few controls on the bottom and right edge of the screen. The menu interface is still slow to get through and overly complicated.
I am not sure who HP was targeting with the Dreamscreen. Perhaps minimalists who want to ditch their clock, internet radio, calendar and standard photo frame in favor of this. For them it would be good. Perhaps. But for the rest of us, just use your computer or smart phone. It is quicker, easier, and you can do more. Kevin Nicholls hit the nail on the head with his review. My opinion is to wait -- easier to use and more functional devices are on the horizon or are already in your home. But if you want a digital picture frame that can do other things (though not well) and you don't mind the price, then this may just be for you. I've had mine for months and the only feature I still regularly use is the photo slideshow.
It is a Dream - the DreamScreen
I bought this for my wife, for Christmas. At first, she thought it was just another Digital Frame. She later found out that it was so much more. It may have taken some time to set it up and get started, but it is worth it. We have it displayed in our Living Room and turn it on whenever we have company. Our kids are amazed by it everyday and love the pictures that we have uploaded on it and play with the music we also uploaded on it or stream from Pandora! It's just plain great.
Great Photo Frame
We purchased this item for our retail store to play product video. Wireless was easy to set up but connecting to a computer was difficult with XP, easy with Vista. Sound is good but I wish speakers were on sides instead of back. Built in memory was a nice feature other frames don't have. When you hit the slideshow button, it always starts at the beginning of the files. Wish it remembered where it stopped last time and starting playing from that spot. Haven't used facebook or snapfish features. Radio & Pandora worked great but again, when you hit slideshow, it always starts at the beginning. Timer on/off funtion works great.
Other features are nice too. I wish it was easier to multitask on this frame. For example, I wish I could set the clock to show every 10 minutes and play pictures in between. But overall, this is a really cool frame. Firmware update is automatic so new features may be added in future releases. Video can be set to automatically repeat so it plays and plays.
I have several Kodak frames which are great too. Menu of HP is easier to use than Kodak.
The wireless connection to a Vista computer is really cool when trying to easily add new pictures or videos.
If given the chance to buy this frame again, I would say Yes.
excellent product with great potential
I bought the Dreamscreen 100 on sale and as a gift for my wife (she loves it!). Before purchasing I was a bit wary because of the mixed reviews on Amazon and other sites. First of all, this isn't a tablet computer, so reviewers shouldn't pretend that it is trying to be one. Second, the image quality is excellent. Third, my only real gripe is with the software that you load on your PC as it is a bit clumsy and there isn't a mac version and thus no integration with iPhoto on my Apple computer. I don't use Flickr or Snapfish, and rarely use Facebook so this review won't be about the merits of those types of features.
I was able to get streaming setup from my netbook (running Windows XP), but I don't leave the netbook on or at home. I ended up exporting about 1000 photos from iPhoto on my Apple and transferred them using the PC software from my netbook. I could have also used a flash memory card or USB drive but didn't see the need since I had 1.5GB of free space to play with on the Dreamscreen. With three kids we have thousands of good pictures that we don't print out. It is such a pleasure to see them from time to time as we glance at the photo frame. Granted, any photo frame can do this, but the Dreamscreen looks excellent, both in aesthetics and picture quality. At 10" it is quite visible from far across the room and the brightness and clarity is again excellent.
I mentioned this isn't a tablet computer, iTouch, or touch screen. It really shouldn't be - who wants greasy fingerprint smudges all over their kid's face? However, I did start playing with Pandora and HP SmartRadio. These are cool features and infinitely usable on a photo frame! The built in speakers are okay and sound good at low to moderate volume. I haven't tried cranking them up because I really don't need that kind of noise in the house (I have three kids running around as it is!). The Pandora integration is really slick and matches whatever stations you have already customized from your computer's browser. You can also search for new stations and add them to the account from the Dreamscreen. Once you start Pandora you can view the album art and rate songs, or just hit the slideshow button and the Dreamscreen will continue playing music while showing your photos. I would really like to get another one for my desk at the office as I often wear headphones while programming or concentrating on tasks where I don't want to be distracted. I also use the built in weather forecast program and it works great and looks slick.
Overall, I am really looking forward to further improvements to the Dreamscreen through future software releases (the frame automatically updates itself). iPhoto integration from my Apple computer would be appreciated, otherwise I will from time to time just export photos to the Dreamscreen. This isn't a big deal to do and only takes a few minutes. I am really happy with this purchase and based upon the features I have used, have no qualms recommending it to someone else. Try to find it on sale if you can - retail can be a bit steep sometimes.
